This is where the HP finally met its match. I am very happy with the HP's capabilities in decent light. When you have deep, dark shadows, the HP hits its noise limit before it can bring out much detail. Its logarithmic density rating of 3.0 can't keep pace with the Nikon's 3.6-3.8.
I usually work around this by darkening the shadow areas to a level where noise doesn't show. This works well in many cases, but not all.
The upper photo excerpts are the best I could produce from each scanner, and I used 16x oversampling on the Nikon. The enlarged portions below are brightened significantly to reveal detail and noise.
