This is the sort of scan my HP had problems with. While it looks OK at web size and depth, I seem to get a lot of noise in lightly-colored areas, such as clouds and sky. You can't really see it here, but the HP scan has some banding in the cloud area. It looks OK on the screen, but when printed on my Canon BJC-7000, the banding pops right out. It looks a little like canvas.
The HP scan had good color balance initially, and only required some work with levels. The Nikon had good level balance, but was far too green initially. Once again, the Nikon had "better" color depth, even though the hues were off.

Nikon LS-2000 -- Much deeper colors; looks more like what I remember, but who can be sure without a positive to look at? |
HP Photosmart - The trees look a little sharper; surf seems to have more noise. | |

Finally, the ugly. A dark, flash-lit outdoor slide shot. Next
